Each June, our nation celebrates Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI+) Pride Month to honor the contributions of LGBTQI+ persons to our nation, and to reflect on progress our nation has made to reaffirm our support for equality, inclusion, and justice for members of the LGBTQI+ community.

This month also marks the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Bostock v. Clayton County, which affirmed that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

On January 20, 2011, President Biden issued an Executive Order preventing and combating discrimination on the basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation, calling on the head of each federal agency to adopt a plan to combat this topic, as well as any intersectional forms of adverse actions that may exist.

Here in Colorado, various legislation has been passed in support of non-discrimination protections for LGBTQI+ Americans, such as:

  • HB21-1108,  updating statewide anti-discrimination protections to include Gender Identity and Gender Expression.
  • HB19-1192, creating the inclusion of matters relating to American minorities in the teaching of history, culture, social contributions, and civil government in public school education, including the history of and contributions individuals in the LGBTQI+ community.
  • HB21-1072, improving equal access to services related to child and youth out-of-home placement.

There are multiple Pride events and festivals in our state annually throughout the month of June. Denver Pride is celebrated this coming weekend, June 25-26. To learn more, please visit: https://denverpride.org/
