DENVER -- Governor Polis issued a proclamation today recognizing April as National Financial Capability Month in Colorado. Financial Capability Month is also recognized nationally as a way to highlight the value of improving the knowledge and skills required to best manage personal finances. The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) joins other consumer protection, financial literacy, and economic, equity, diversity, and inclusion partners in recognizing National Financial Capability Month.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic economic recovery, as well as natural disaster recovery such as the Marshall Fire, the proclamation notes that this month also serves as a time to raise awareness about the critical need for both financial preparation and resiliency resources so that individuals and families may plan for and make the best personal financial decisions they can, whether during good or challenging times. See the proclamation here.

“Raising awareness about the importance of financial capability is a key component of economic inclusion as well as consumer protection,” said DORA Executive Director Patty Salazar. “When we work together to share resources that are available to strengthen an individual’s financial capability, it can empower them, their families and our communities, and help financial institutions better understand and meet their needs, as well as help prepare for, respond to and recover from crises.”

DORA houses the Financial Engagement Unit, a joint effort between DORA’s Banking and Financial Services regulatory divisions. The unit collaborates with private and public sector organizations to help raise awareness about financial capability and economic inclusion. This month, the unit is focused on raising awareness for financial capability-building resources, such as Money Smart Week and Military Saves Month programs, as well as local and national resources available to stay financially secure during times of disaster.
