What You Need to Know
PUC Chair Eric Blank will lead a discussion on utility bill affordability, with a presentation by Erin O’Neill, Chief Economist, and Gail Conners, Chief of Media Relations, Outreach and Engagement.
In the wake of a cold November and December, increasing natural gas commodity prices, utility rate increases and high utility bills going into the winter of 2022-2023, consumers have voiced their opinions and concerns with complaints and comments nearly doubling typical volume. This presentation will help customers understand what is driving the high bills, what is not driving high bills, and offer potential sources of relief.
The presentation will include an analysis of the year-over-year bill changes for a typical utility customer, including a breakdown of the main drivers of bill increases, perspectives on the natural gas commodity market, and some expectations for the future.
The discussion will also include information on where to access financial resources to help consumers including weatherization and income qualified assistance, as well as how to publicly engage with the PUC to make their voices heard.
